Roses of Elagabalus is a queer clubhouse in the heart of Dalston, London, inspired by early 20th-century outsider venues like Cave of the Golden Calf, Cabaret Fledermaus, and Le Chat Noir. Its name references the rebellious and controversial Roman Emperor Elagabalus.
The club is a labyrinth of dimly lit, sensual spaces. Upstairs features a Viennese-inspired bar and chic cabaret performance area, while downstairs offers darker, more intimate rooms, including a bathhouse-inspired tiled dancefloor called “The Tank” and a fully mirrored central powder room. Unexpected pockets throughout encourage both group gatherings and intimate encounters.
Referencing design movements from Wiener Werkstätte and Adolf Loos to Parisian cabaret, Yves Saint Laurent’s apartment, and Studio 54, the interior reinterprets these influences into a contemporary queer space. Stainless steel accents, deep red glossy walls, and heavy curtains create a cinematic atmosphere reminiscent of David Lynch or Wong Kar Wai.. Photos by Ollie G Tomlinson
